Clifford's Tower, York English Heritage

Clifford's Tower, York

William the Conqueror built the mound and the round tower, initially of wood in 1070. later it was rebuilt in stone by Henry III in the 13th century.  The tower, known as "Clifford's Tower" was the central keep of of the castle, there were more buildings, surrounded by great walls and then a moat around the whole fortress.

Although little remains of the rest of the castle, it's worth the climb to the top of Clifford's Tower for the wonderful view over York. It's one of my favourite cities with lots to see and do. The Jorvik Centre, the Castle museum, the City Walls, the Minster, the ghost walks, the snickleways.......

The Castle Area Campaign is trying to stop development of a shopping mall next to Clifford's Tower, we lend our support to the group defending our heritage.

Richmond English Heritage

Richmond Castle The castle sits above the River Swale in the lovely old town of Richmond. The building was begun in Norman times (about. 1070) in an effort to quieten the rebellious North. Alan Rufus, first Earl of Richmond, made this his principal castle and residence. The 12th century keep is about 100ft high with immensely thick walls.

The views from the castle walls, over Richmond on one side and down to the river on the other are magnificent.
Legend links Richmond with King Arthur - he is reputed to lie in a cave nearby awaiting England's hour of need.
