Barnard Castle English Heritage

Inside Barnard Castle

The town of Barnard Castle lies on the banks of the River Tees where an ancient Roman ford crossed the river. The castle which the town grew up around was first fortified in the eleventh century. It was the stronghold of the Ballioll family, a member of which built the circular tower which still survives. Nearby is the Round Tower where the emblem of Richard III, one of the later owners, can be seen.

The castle sits high above the river and the views from the walls are stunning.
