Crete - Greek Travels

Lassithi Plain, Crete

We went to Crete in May, there was snow on the mountaintops, but the water was warm enough for swimming.  It was quite something to be sunbathing on the beach, but able to look up and see the snow on the mountains.

It would take a long time to explore all of Crete, but we hired a car for a few days and did our best!  Knossos had been on my list of 'must visit' places, so that was one place we had to go.  The legends of the Minotaur, the labyrinth, Daedalus and Icarus - all are set here.

The picture is taken on the Lassithi Plain, famous for it's windmills, and rural beauty and the legendary birthplace of Zeus.

Just off the coast near Elounda, lies the island of Spinalonga, whose history spans hundreds of years, in 1579 the Venetians build a fortress on the ruins of an ancient fort, but latterly it was the last leper colony in Europe, finally closing in 1952.
